reduce disposable waste

There are many people that would like to assist in reducing, reusing, and recycling.  Are we asking ourselves when considering to throw away the empty plastic bottle of water in the nearest trash or walk a little further to put in the recycling container?  What would you do?  There are habits we can mold from wanting to start with the small things first. Are we considering walking out of the store with a few items in our arms or are we  accepting another plastic bag?  Do you remember to bring plastic bag back to the store?  The small things.

  • Plastics in the U.S. are made primarily (70 percent) from domestic natural gas.
  • Plastic shopping bags and product wraps (known collectively as “plastic film”) are commonly recycled at the many collection programs offered through major grocery stores.
  • Recycling one ton of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space.
  • During Keep America Beautiful’s 2008 Great American Cleanup, volunteers recovered and recycled 189,000,000 PET (plastic) bottles that had been littered along highways, waterways and parks.

There are many different ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.  The important thing is to make a decision on every action until it becomes habit.   If you stop at a convenient store and reach for a bottled water, maybe consider a fountain drink instead where the cup (as long as it is plastic) can be reused by you (plus you will save a quarter or two by purchasing a refill).    It makes using a cup from a convenient store less painful on the environment and your wallet.

There are many other ideas for recycling containers.  Here is another tip I use daily.

  • Instead of buying a cup of coffee each day, buy a washable to-go cup.  Keep it with you.  Convenient stores have sinks where they let you rinse out your mug.  You might find it difficult to remember each day.  It will take some time to develop the habit, but making the decision  to do your part of reducing, reusing and recycling is the largest part of change;  the next is action.
  • There are millions of plastic bottles delivered to landfills weekly.  Here is a great website to see how many bottles of water find there way into landfills.

Don’t Pre-Heat the Oven
unless needed, just turn the oven on after you put the dish in it. Also, to see if it’s finished just look through the glass instead of opening it.
